Onsite Medical Services
At HPL, we pride ourselves in our ability to provide every aspect of a facility’s healthcare needs. From comprehensive examinations when inmates first arrive to the vaccination and immunization of staff, we offer a full range of services to improve the overall healthcare systems of the facilities we serve.
Below is a list of the comprehensive healthcare services HPL offers:
Receiving Screenings and Health Assessments
HPL works hand-in-hand with your facility to create custom intake criteria unique to your location. When an inmate first arrives, a receiving health screening is performed based on structured inquiry and observation, with special attention taken if an inmate is discovered to have an injury or illness. During the receiving screening, staff discuss with each inmate their healthcare needs as well as the medical services available to them while at the facility.
Within the first 14 days of an inmate’s admission into the facility, HPL staff will perform an inmate health assessment, which includes a review of the receiving screening, the inmate’s healthcare history and a physical exam. If the health assessment results require further evaluation or treatment, a referral to the appropriate health provider will be made.
Communicable Diseases
To ensure the health of all inmates at a given facility, HPL closely monitors and screens for communicable diseases including HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and sexually transmitted diseases, when medically necessary. All inmates are tested for tuberculosis. Should communicable diseases be diagnosed, we will undertake the necessary isolation procedures and follow local health department protocols in the treatment of the inmate. HPL will follow-up by sending the appropriate reports to the facility’s local or state health department.
HPL also provides tuberculosis testing as well various other vaccination and immunizations to all facility staff.
Labs and X-rays
HPL follows NCCHC Standards to ensure laboratory and X-ray services are made available when medically necessary.
Non-Emergency Healthcare Requests and Services
Using a proprietary system, HPL reviews inmate requests for non-emergency health services and medications and makes discretionary decisions about necessity on a case-by-case basis.
Supplies, Equipment and Medications
HPL provides and manages all medical and office supplies necessary for the operation of a correctional healthcare program. In each facility, we create an individualized list of procedures for the daily safety and security of medical inventory. All HPL staff members are trained in the proper handling, storage and disposal of hazardous and contaminated medical waste. We ensure the safety and security of all controlled substances, syringes, needles, chemicals and surgical instruments.
