Off-Site Patient Care

While it is HPL’s primary responsibility to provide preventive, proactive onsite medical care, there are often complex cases that require off-site medical attention. In such cases, we use the Milliman Care Guidelines® as screening criteria to review the medical necessity of any offsite appointment and length of stay for inpatient hospitalizations. Any procedure deemed necessary for off-site care will take place at an area hospital.

In order to ensure the appropriate care and timeliness of a particular treatment, HPL conducts physician-to-physician or physician-to-nurse consultations with the off-site medical staff. Providing care in a timely manner can slow the progression of disease and worsening of symptoms, which can result in a reduction of costs to the facility.

HPL’s off-site patient care program follows four key interactive components – prospective review, concurrent review, readmission review and retrospective review. A complete review occurs prior to the delivery of non-emergency care such as scheduled hospitalizations, outpatient surgical procedures, specialty office visits, etc. Our program is designed to ensure the delivery of the most appropriate care, at the right time, in the most cost-effective setting.
