Facilty Spotlight
Alpena County, MI Jail
The Alpena County Jail opened in 1956 with a 28-inmate bed capacity. In 1989 the facility added four, 10-bed dorm rooms as well as a segregation cell. Today, Alpena County has room for 69 inmates. Like in most small correctional facilities where staff are often stretched thin, the Alpena County Jail faces a unique challenge: how to provide inmates with proper healthcare while managing the many other operational requirements of a county jail.
Without a contracted healthcare provider, Alpena County struggled to do just that. The jail’s deputies were put in charge of delivering medication to inmates, which took valuable time away from their other duties. There were no nurses on duty to answer deputies’ health-related questions or to deal with any emergencies that arose. Another problem was an inadequate examination room ill-equipped to handle many healthcare situations.
After partnering with HPL in February of 2009, Alpena County Jail has been able to increase the care they provide their inmates and reduce the time and liability of the officers. Today, a physician is on-call 24/7 while nurses visit the facility five days a week. The sub par medical room has since been renovated with an exam table, sink, medication cart and oxygen for emergencies. HPL has also increased the breath of the facility’s services by partnering with a local mental health provider and facilitating future training for nurses and deputies on suicide prevention.
