Michael Acree

Michael Acree is the Director of Government Affairs/Professional Relations with HPL and is responsible for correctional facility and county jail services in 11 Western states. Prior to joining HPL, Mr. Acree served as the Deputy Executive Director for the Colorado Department of Public Safety.

Mr. Acree has an incredible background in law enforcement having served most recently as the Sheriff of Douglas County in Colorado. As an elected official, he managed a budget of $8.3 million and a staff of more than 400. He was also a key player in the design, building and implementation of a new Douglas County justice center including the jail facility.

Mr. Acree has served in many Governor and state appointed positions including Colorado Lottery Commissioner; Colorado P.O.S.T. Board, Law Enforcement Driving and Law Enforcement Education Bill; Colorado Automobile Theft Prevention Board; Governor’s Task Force on Sexually Violent Predators; Appointed Honorary Colonel by the Colorado State Patrol; Colorado Search and Rescue Fund Advisory Council and Douglas County Homeland Security.

Over the years, Mr. Acree has received an incredible number of awards and recognition. Most recently, he received the 35 Years of Law Enforcement Award. He is an active member in many organizations including the National Sheriff's Association, American Jail Association, American Correctional Association and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.

Mr. Acree earned an associate’s degree in administration of justice from Arapahoe Community College and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice/management from Metro State College. He is also a graduate of FBI National Management Academy 163rd Session.
